Im going to get a new gigabyte 890GX board with the 1055T .. should be enough for 3DS rendering.
  • tremtastic - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

Do you have any details of Dell compatibility?

We've got a few Optiplex 740 Athlon X2s around the office that we would love to upgrade.
  • Belard - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

That, would be up to Dell... which is not likely as they prefer to sell whole systems.

Check out their site or contact that tech support for compatible CPUs. If Dell starts selling such CPUs for the same series, then a BIOS upgrade is all you would need.

Your Dells should have AM3 motherboards (DDR3) which is best, but these work in most AM2+ boards.

This is why many of us BUILD our own computers.

    Thanks Mr Patronising.

I build my own computers, I currently run a Phenom II x4 965.

I was talking about the machines we have at work. How many companies do you know of that build their own machines?
  • Taft12 - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

Many smaller companies build their own machines when it's appropriate (such as mine).

The 740 does not support any 45nm AMD CPUs, so the chances of x6 support are zero. Business desktops don't run any apps that would benefit from 6 cores anyway. Finally, why are you asking us and not Dell?
  • Amoro - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

The company I work builds their own machines. We rarely go OEM. We're a game development studio though so that's probably why. We have to test on many different types of machines.

Can't wait for it to come. Upgrading from an Intel E4300!
  • LuxZg - Sunday, May 2, 2010 - link

I'm thinking about the same, going from my old E4400 to one of the X6 CPUs.. but I somehow think it's not gonna be anytime soon since I've got another major purchase to do as well (HD cam) :/

I have a 1090T paired with MSI 890GXM and G.Skill Ecos.. so far so good, no problems and a great upgrade from my Q6600 :D
  • BFitzroy - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

I'm going to be using mine with an MSI 790GX Platinum.
I'll wait till Bulldozer before moving to a DDR3 board.

My Asus M3A78-CM AM2+ board is not on the list and I see no BIOS updates. So looks like I am SOL :(
  • BPB - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

I don't see any support at all listed at the ASUS website. The Phenom II X6 CPU's aren't even listed in the drop down for CPU selection. I'll think twice before I get an ASUS board again.

Dude, THE LINK IS RIGHT IN ANAND'S POST!

    http://event.asus.com/mb/2010/m4_6cores/

Quit being so hasty to dump on a company when you can't find the info you want on the first day.

Sorry to the guy with the M3A- board, you are indeed SOL

I bought the 1055T and am planning to buy a BioStar board. For 150$, it was a pretty cheap chip and bought it for a future build for my WHS. With the new version of the OS releasing soon I decided to hold off on other parts for the build. That way most manufacturers will get their BIOS updates sorted and I will be able to pick up a board without worrying about BIOS flashing and/or compatibility.

Any suggestions on a AM2+ with two full x16 pcie lanes? I have extra DDR2 memory laying around...

    M4A79 Deluxe

    http://ca.asus.com/product.aspx?P_ID=F8NXs2xIQloc5...

The latest BIOS update is from March of this year which likely added X6 support.

Maybe the Asus 980a board too? M4N82 Deluxe

    Thanks for the leads...!
  • gimptech89 - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

I actually jumped the gun and ordered a Gigabyte GA-890GPA-UD3H 2 weeks ago...throwing a Phenom II X6 1090T in it. probably gonna throw a 5850 or 5870 in there...

eventually a second one... Building my first ever folding rig :P
  • jabby - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

Will a FOXCONN A7DA-S support the X6?? I still using 9850BE and it's time to upgrade before moving to DDR3 and something newer.

"If you do a lot of video encoding for $150 you can't beat the TigerDirect deal"

That's idiocy 'cause you can buy a nice Fermi board and your video encoding with Badaboom will be faster TENFOLD if not more. Why waste money on a useless CPU for video encoding when you can have GPU video encoder that's like orders of magnitude faster?
  • jabby - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

The cheapest fermi card is 349+7.49 shipping http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8... adding $30 for badaboom which supports only 2 output profiles http://store.nvidia.com/DRHM/servlet/ControllerSer... Getting a new processor is a better option. Plus you can do more with it.
  • Pirks - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

Getting CPU is better because it costs 2x less and works 20x slower? Hahaha :) Thanks, was a good laugh.
  • chrnochime - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

This taken from their blog just now:

    Output Audio Formats

    AAC-LC (2 channel)

Wow look at that; All that speed with just 2 channel stereo output!! It's like we're back in the 90's again, rockin' the 1080P and a sweet sweet 2 channel (not even 2.1, just 2!!) audio. Oh yeah.

Still think all that Badaboom is all that Pirk?
  • Pirks - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

    www.mediacoderhq.com

munch on yet another GPU video encoder now sonny :P
  • chrnochime - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

So instead of responding to my post about the oh-so-sweet 2.0 audio with badaboom, you change topic and throw out another completely different encoder. Come on, where's your witty response with regard to the 2.0 audio? I'm still waiting here. Gonna tell me that 2.0 is eons better than 2.1/5.1/7.1?

WTH does that mediacoderhq have to do with Badaboom? Oh rhetorical question what was I thinking.

    Try harder next time.
  • Pirks - Wednesday, April 28, 2010 - link

Maybe you gotta check how many audio channels this GPU powered mediacoder supports sonny? ;) Just give it a try will ya? Don't be afraid, hehehe

I kid, I kid, but could you imagine if I could replace my X2 4600+ in my Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe (AM2+) with one of these.
  • l8gravely - Thursday, April 29, 2010 - link

Sigh, I've got an M2N-SLI Deluxe as well. Great board which I wish I could upgrade. Maybe an X4 will fit in there? I really need a new server, but that's a whole new build and I'm not quite ready to pull the trigger there yet.

No support for the ASUS M4A79XTD. ASUS did release a new BIOS for it a short time ago that listed "Support new CPUs" as the only release note, but it isn't listed.

    ...GA-MA78G-DS3H (rev. 1.0 or 2.x) yet.
  • Burticus - Thursday, April 29, 2010 - link

I have an EVGA 730A and the latest bios E113 is over a year old. I posted on the forums asking about it but nothing yet. Currently running a Phenom II x3 710, would like to double my core count for BD reauthoring...
  • xsilver - Sunday, May 2, 2010 - link

hey anand are you going to do some benches with ddr2 boards with the x6 ? Its mentioned in the review that the x6 is already slightly crippled by the dual channel memory - how much more crippled is it going to be with ddr2?
  • minghi - Tuesday, May 4, 2010 - link

just paired my new shiny amd 1055t with gigabyte ga-ma785gm-us2h v1.1 and 800mhz ddr2 ram (hp nanya) and it booted right up after a nice bios (F10) update... woohoo... but I wonder if I can see 25% improvement if I upgraded to DDR3 & 890FX???
