I always feel confined by 13" displays. I think lighter 15 inch laptops with no optical drives should take off. That should bring the weight to about the same as a 14" with an optical drive.
Brian, the solution to your problems to start up a Sherpa service at CES. With someone else doing the carrying, that would free you up to take photos and save your back in the process.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I kind of assumed that Brian was just serving as Anand's sherpa? Except that Brian doesn't just carry the gear, he has to operate it, too :P
"This way I have a device in my pocket on all the major carriers save Sprint at the show."
Two things:
1) WHY would you even want that? Ha ha (I assume it's just for curiosity's sake, to have first hand experience on how the different networks perform in a real life large event setting)
2) I prefer wireless "operator" rather than "carrier", due to the namespace collision ("carrier" is also used to refer to frequency band).
Hee hee hee (for those not in the know, #2 is actually what Brian himself says these days - now I'm just throwing it back in his face because he slipped up and reverted to "carrier" instead of "operator" in the article, ha ha :D).
1) At CES every wireless operator pretty much dies at one point or another. It's something none of the *operators* (you caught me) are immune to, so I want a device on each one just in case the others fail, otherwise it's impossible to post or do anything.
I don't know about SD cards, but I have lots of different brand of microSD and they all work fine with my 2011 MBP, I mostly use microSD with adapters instead of straight SD.
the SD card slot is a known issue with MBPs. My 2010 MBP has this problem as well. In my case my higher capacity SD cards are more finicky than the 512mb and 1gb cards I still have laying about. I wonder if it doenst have something to do with the odd "half in" mechanism of the card reader.
My SD card slot just has always had issues reading every SD card I throw at it. Patriot, SanDisk, micro->full size adapters, the Eye-Fi card, it doesn't matter. I have to jam it in and tilt it at an extreme angle to make it work at all.
I've pretty much been on the look out for a new laptop bag ever since my Christmas trip. Given that I head up north, I almost always get screwed over by mother nature in some fashion, which tends to involve more time spent in an airport than intended. I also had TSA flag an item (that weighed 2lb) in my checked baggage, which meant I had to put it in my laptop bag. Well, all of this added up to giving me some rather worn out shoulders from my messenger-style laptop bag.
The Rampaging Mob (medium or large) ought to be a nice (yet pricey) solution!
Although it seems like it would be convenient for carrying around your camera at the ready, you can't help but feel a tad disappointed that there's no place to put your bag of Cheetos.
I wonder if you'd try a wrist cuff as an alternative camera strap? I've nearly funded one on kickstarter that is meant to stay on as a cuff all day while your camera can clip in and out for when you're shooting. Would love to know what you think if you get a minute: http://kck.st/12zAuBW

Brilliant--you could probably get someone to lug a bag just to get in and see whatever Brian's photographing with all those cameras. :)Paulman - Sunday, January 6, 2013 - link

"Operator" sounds weird to me. I would say wireless "provider," but I could just be a little weird myself.Brian Klug - Monday, January 7, 2013 - link

"Because the SD card slot on my 2011 MBP has never worked properly with most of my SD cards"What cards? Not a mac owner, but I've always found that to be a perk that borders on necessity.

Any idea if that's still a problem in the 2012 MBP? I seem to recall an article section on that but I don't remember which.Aikouka - Sunday, January 6, 2013 - link
